Guest guest
No development on the project - This was covered by Indo-Asian News Service on Jan 28 A project to save wild elephants from being run over by speeding trains in Jharkhand has hit a road block following a row between two government departments. The forest department mooted an ambitious Rs.16 million project two years ago that would have involved fencing the winding railway tracks, particularly in the districts where elephants roam freely. According to forest officials, trains have killed nine elephants in the last three years: five in 2000, three in 2001 and one last year. Most deaths occurred in Singhbhum district. The railways and the forest department were to share the cost. According to the officials, while the forest department has released Rs.2 million as part of its cost, the railways is yet to respond. " Erecting barriers along the tracks would prevent elephants from crossing them, " one official said. Tuskers have wrecked havoc in Jharkhand killing nearly 150 people since November 2000 besides damaging houses and standing crops. Districts like Dumka and Pakur as well as the outskirts of Ranchi are the worst hit. We would like to act as pressure group for this project do suggest regards, Praveen Ohal
