SPCA sets up youth division

THE Penang Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has set

up its first youth division to attract more participation by young animal

lovers.

The division's leader, John Shebat de Silva, said this wing would help the

socie- ty organise activities for the younger generation.

This would include educational road shows, elocution contests, quizzes,

children's education camps, exhibitions, fund-raising efforts and school

trips, he said in Penang.

“We hope more youths from schools and colleges will join the division which

is ideal for animal lovers,” said de Silva.

Membership is open to those from 13 to 25, he said, adding that the first

youth camp would be organised next year.

“I got involved in SPCA last year. Under the new Moral Education syllabus

for Form Five, students have to volunteer in any welfare home for a day.

“I picked SPCA and had not stopped volunteering since then. We have adopted

two dogs from the SPCA recently,” he added.

The Institut Perkim-Goon A-Level student said the institute had also agreed

to let the division set up an SPCA unit for its students.

“Our ultimate aim is to set up a unit in every educational institution from

school to tertiary level in Penang,” he said.

SPCA Penang administrator Lily Leng said before the division was set up,

only children up to the age of 12 could take part in SPCA activities such as

the children's camp.

“Thus, those after 12 did not have a chance to join such activities.

“With the setting up of this division, they can now join it and participate

in its activities,” she added.
