This is with reference to Azam Siddiqui's e-mails re the export from India

(Assam) of a rhino ti Thailand in exchange for orangutans.

Legally, as per provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, no animal

under Schedules 1 and 2 can be exported.

Please see letter from Dr. Nanditha Krishna, the Honorary Director of the CPR

Environmental Education Centre and member of the Central Zoo Authority to the

Member Secretary of the CZA below.

The law is only as good as its enforcement. This is often lacking, not only in

India but the world over. Atleast we have the law on our side and we must do

our best to have it implemented.

Shri. B. R. Sharma,

Member Secretary,

Central Zoo Authority,

Bikaner House, Annexe VI,

Shahjahan Road,

New Delhi 110 011.

Dear Shri. Sharma,

It has been brought to my notice that there is a move to send a rhinoceros

to Thailand.

Chapter 5 (A) of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 prohibits trade or

commerce in Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 animals. The rhinoceros is listed

under Schedule 1 of the Act. Therefore, there is no way this should be

permitted. Kindly ensure that the move to send a rhinoceros to Thailand is

stopped immediately.

I am enclosing a report I received about the Assam State Zoo which is

absolutely horrible. Please take necessary action at the earliest.

With warm regards,

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Nanditha Krishna

Hon. Director

Encl.: as above.
