Black sheep to blame for bird woes

I REFER to the letter, “Birds also wreaking havoc in Taiping”, (The Star, July

2).

In Taiping, we have the North Perak Bird’s Nest Harvesters and Merchants

Association. We estimate there are about 200 people operating the bird’s nest

business in Taiping and most of them are not our members.

As in all industries, there will always be some black sheep. Therefore, the

association is trying to recruit and educate bird’s nest operators to be mindful

of their civil responsibilities.

The association is cooperating with the authorities and some of our members are

strictly following the guidelines set by the association.

We do not encourage the operators to play recorded bird sounds loudly and

continuously as this poses a nuisance to the public.

However, some unscrupulous operators are doing whatever they like to attract

the birds, which are known as white nest swiftlets (Aerodramus fuciphagus).

These swiftlets are different from the swallows that make their nests at the

top of five-foot-ways and whose droppings pollute the walkways and streets.

We are in the midst of educating our members to strictly follow the guidelines

to prevent the spread of any bird disease.

YEAP THEAN ENG,

North Perak Bird’s Nest Harvesters and Merchants Association, Taiping.
