103 pangolins seized from house

BY JULLIAN KHOR

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 100 anteaters were seized from a house in Teluk Intan,

following a tip-off that they were to be sent to China.

This is believed to be the biggest seizure of pangolins, known as tenggiling in

Malay, in Perak this year.

Two men, aged 33 and 32, were detained.

Wildlife and National Parks department staff raided a two-storey terrace house

on Thursday and found the anteaters in a storeroom.

The animals have since been taken to the department's headquarters in Cheras

here and, according to its legal and enforcement unit director Misliah Mohamad

Basir, would be released into the forest soon.

It is understood that these endangered species is much sought after for its

meat and scales, which are said to have medicinal value.

Of the 103 anteaters seized, three were found dead. The live animals comprised

60 female, 37 male, and three immature.

The seized anteaters can fetch more than RM80,000 on the market.

The smugglers wanted to make a hefty profit from sending the animals to China

through Thailand, Misliah told a press conference here yesterday.

Wildlife and National Parks deputy director Celescoriano Razond, who headed the

raid, said the anteaters could fetch up to RM150 per animal in Thailand,

compared with RM80 in Malaysia.

The animals were believed to have been captured two weeks ago.

The culprits are liable to various charges under different sections of the

Wildlife Act, with penalties ranging from a jail term of up to 19 years to a

fine not exceeding RM21,000 or both.

The two suspects, who have been freed on bail, will be charged on July 25.
