Kerteh beach to be a turtle sanctuary

KUALA TERENGGANU: Turtles coming to nest at Ma & #146;Daerah Turtle Sanctuary in

Kerteh will have a safe place to deposit their eggs by next month.

 

Not only will the 1.7km stretch of beach be protected, but the surrounding

area, including Bukit Labohan, the hill behind the beach, is also expected to be

gazetted by the state.

 

Terengganu deputy state secretary (development) Mazlan Ngah, who is also the

Economic Planning Unit director, said the state exco would endorse this soon.

 

& #147;The beach and the sea around it (about 6km out to sea) will be protected

for turtle conservation.

 

& #147;The whole protected area will cover 70ha, including the hill, & #148; he

told The Star, adding that no development would be allowed in the area.

 

The Fisheries Department, WWF-Malaysia and BP Petronas Acetyls Malaysia have

been managing Ma & #146;Daerah in partnership since 1999.

 

BP Petronas Acetyls Malaysia plant general manager Ronan O & #146;Neill said

legal protection would ensure that the sanctuary remained undisturbed.

 

Ma & #146;Daerah People & #146;s Heritage Society pro-tem chairman Amran Salleh,

47, said the community supported the move to gazette the turtle sanctuary.
