Sarawak wants DNA of wildlife in Indonesia

KUCHING: Sarawak wants DNA samples of wildlife in Indonesia, including those of

orang utans, to help the State Forestry Corporation and other related agencies

carry out enforcement work.

The corporation & #146;s security and asset protection unit general manager Sani

Bakar said

it made the request during

informal meetings recently with officials of the Indonesian

forestry department and

its Kalimantan provincial office.

The issue had surfaced following several allegations

of timber smuggling across

the Malaysian-Indonesian border.

& #147;The Indonesian authorities understand our position on illegal logging and

its associated trades, & #148; Sani said in a press statement here.

He said the two sides discussed cooperation in trans-boundary issues related to

forestry, like illegal logging and smuggling of timber, flora and fauna.

Sani said Sarawak briefed the Indonesian authorities on how it regulated such

activities and the state & #039;s proposal to study timber smuggling.
