Sikkim SPCA

Situated in the Indian Himalayas, Sikkim is a known as the Switzerland of Asia

with incredibly rich biodiversity and altitudes from 300m - >8000m. The Sikkim

S.P.C.A. (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the first animal

shelter and street dog program to operate in Sikkim and is just beginning

operations in April 2005, being recently established. ABC-AR (Animal Birth

Control- Anti-Rabies) programs for street dogs are the main priority at first,

as rabies is endemic and a major problem in Sikkim. This program is being

co-ordinated by VetCharityOrg and partly funded by the Brigitte Bardot

Foundation.

Vet and nurse volunteers are required for the desexing work year round. Basic

accommodation can be provided in most cases depending on availability.

Involvement in remote ABC camps in regional Sikkimese villages may be possible

from time to time in collaboration with the Sikkim Veterinary and Animal

Husbandry Department.

Great news neighbor! I am a frequent vistor to Gantok and have many

friends there both two legged and otherwise. It's good to hear that another

facility has opened. One of our goals at AnimalNepal, besides producing

pet products for poverty reduction, conducting train the trainer's programs

and other forms of connecting people with animals, is to provide our

volunteers with oppurtunities outside of Nepal. I will let our list know

(animalnepal ). Well, again congrats and good luck.
