Animals effective in predicting tsunami

Chennai, Jun 23: Did animals sense in advance the tsunami? How do

animals react when a natural disaster strikes? Animal instincts or

technology - which one is more effective in predicting natural disasters?

To provide answers to these questions, Animal Planet, the television

channel promoted by Discovery Communications and the BBC, has presented

remarkable findings in its programme `Tsunami: Animal Instincts',

officials said here.

The programme was prepared after detailed investigations, interviews

with scientists, eyewitness accounts and original footage from the

tsunami-struck countries, said Rajiv Bakshi, manager, corporate

communications, Discovery Communications, before the programme was

screened for the media.

The programme, which will be premiered on June 27 (11 pm) on the Animal

Planet channel, tells the story of how different animal species sounded

the alarm much before the killer waves struck. It features astonishing

survival stories, like the divers in Thailand who were guided to safety

by dolphins and also highlights the manner in which people and animals

worked together during the tsunami tragedy to help one another.

" It turns out that technology may not be a match for animal instinct.

Animal instincts and senses proved to be far more effective than any

man-made warning system. Humans also have an intuitive side, but we

often cloud it by our intellect. We tend to rationalise things while an

animal senses something and simply reacts to it, " said Raja

Balasubramanian, brand director, Discovery Networks India. (Agencies)
