Dear Friends of Animals Asia,

Hong Kong Disneyland is due to open in the territory in the next few

months and Disney have been under fire for their decision to serve

the delicacy " Shark's Fin Soup " at wedding banquets.

Many of you who live outside of Asia may not know that the harvesting

of " shark's fin " is not only horrendously cruel (the shark has its

fins cut off and the body is then tossed back into the sea where it

dies a slow and painful death), but it is also unsustainable as 50-

100 million sharks a year are harvested. Literally dozens of shark

species are facing extinction because of this ghastly practice and

top marine scientists are predicting that the removal of sharks from

the ocean will have dire consequences for the survival of other

marine life.

In some senses this issue is similar to bear bile in the respect that

the supply is fueling the demand. Shark fin was traditionally only

available to a wealthy minority, but is now readily available and

much cheaper - with dire consequences for the ocean's eco-system.

If Disney decides to not serve Shark's Fin on environmental grounds,

we have a real opportunity to change attitudes here in Asia and

reinforce our message that tradition is never an excuse for cruelty

and exploitation. Please join us by emailing a sample letter of

protest to executives for you to forward on to Disney decision makers:

Sharks may not have people's affection in the same way as bears or

dogs and cats, but they need our help - please join us and give them

a voice.

Warm wishes,
