Threat to big dogs in Beijing

Dear Sirs,

My name is Maria and I come from Greece. This morning I received the

information below and I have to admit I got seriously preoccupied. According to

the following mail there will be taken some very cruel measures concerning big

dogs in order to prevent- what exactly? It doesn't make sense to me. If it is

about animals getting violent, domestic animals' character and reactions are

formed and modified under their owners' influence. A domestic animal behaves the

way it learns to. These creatures do not behave aggressively because it is in

their nature but because they learned to do so or because they have been abused.

Having lived along with big dogs for a long time, I can assure anybody that they

can be more tender and friendly than we could ever imagine. Prohibiting or

eliminating big dogs is neither a right nor a useful thing to do especially in a

country whose long-aged traditions always represented a harmonic relationship

between human and nature. On the other hand, I cannot accept that just a breath

away from the 2008 Olympics such inhumane activities take place.

Animals' abuse and inhumane treatment lies far from civilization and hunane

behavior while better solutions can be found such amendment of the dog keeping

regulation and promotion of responsible care and keeping of domestic animals

from their owners. Humane solutions are expected more than ever in a time where

messages coming from many countries (Asian ones, too) imply that people start to

face animals more like " roomates on the same planet " or just friends. It is our

debt to protect them from suffering. Please, do your best to this direction.

Sincerely yours.

>Dear Kim,

>

>ARB held a forum on the violence of big dog on June 11

>in Beijing Guodu Pet Park. Over 200 pet dog owners

>attended the forum with the enthusiam even hotter than

>the temperature.

>

>Experts on pet and animal study, representatives of

>environmental protection NGOs and representatives of

>big dog clubs made speeches on the tenderness and

>intimacy of big dogs with live dog shows. A proposal

>on the amendment of the dog keeping regulation was

>passed by the participants and woul be handed in to

>the government.

>

>A dozen media interviewed the forum but only one

>newspaper published the report. As we learned later

>that the city legal affair department noted that the

>issue of big dog was sensitive and forbidded the

>report of big dog issue in the local media.

>

>According to gross statistics, there are over 200,000

>big dogs which are prohibited by the Impementation

>Guide to the Beijing Dog Keeping Regulation issued by

>the Beijing Municipal Government in Oct. 2003. Also

>dogs higher than 35cm (excluding the head) are

Please consider writing letters of protest (see end of letter for an address)

and sharing this letter to help the dogs in China. Thank you.
