Orang utan attacks sisters at centre

KUCHING: What was to have been a fun outing to the Matang Wildlife Centre near

here turned into a horrifying experience for two sisters when they were attacked

by a female orang utan.

They were both bitten on their legs by the animal during a visit with four of

their children on Tuesday afternoon.

The victims, in their 30s and 40s, only want to be identified as the Tong

sisters.

The elder sister, from Sibu, was here on holiday with her 17-year-old daughter.

In the group were also the younger sister’s 11-year-old son and two other

children, aged seven years and 10 months.

The younger sister said the orang utan turned violent after it failed to grab a

bag from her 11-year-old son.

“As l pulled my son away, it turned on my sister and bit her leg.

“l quickly handed my baby to my niece and told all the children to run for

safety before l rushed to help my sister.

“When l tried to push the orang utan away from my sister, it att-acked me,” she

told reporters when met at her home in Jalan Song yesterday.

According to her, she struggled with the animal for about 10 minutes before it

ran off.

The sisters then approached the centre’s caretaker and were given some medicine

for their wounds. They then sought treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital.

They hope the centre would make sure that such an incident would not recur.

No official from the centre, a popular place for tourists, could be reached for

comment on Wednesday as it was a state public holiday.
