Don’t let greed wipe out our forests

I WAS saddened to read that the forests of Temenggor in Hulu (Upper Perak) have

been plundered by timber thieves“<A

HREF= " http://thestar.com.my/news/archives/story.asp?ppath=\2005\5\13 & file=/2005/\

5/13/nation/10938414 & sec=nation " target=on_top>Grand trees gone</A>”, (The Star,

May 13).

I was at this place recently and was awed by the natural beauty of the forests

that we have been so blessed with.

This place is a form of ecological sponge that will absorb the carbon dioxide

and release oxygen for our benefit and the generations to come.

Unfortunately, the illegal felling of trees has made many places barren and

brown. I noticed this on my way to Grik, Hulu Perak, en route to Temenggor.

It looks as though the profiteers will not stop until every tree is cleared.

The issuance of licences to log at places that are near to forest reserves and

other protected parts of the country's forests is like giving a blank cheque for

loggers, many of whom do not have the slightest concern for the environment.

The Temenggor forest, where a hydroelectric power station is located, is within

the vicinity of the Belum forest reserve and the Banding forest where elephants

are found.

The trees and the wildlife here are a magnificent sight. The Forestry and

Wildlife Department should conduct surprise checks on illegal logging

activities.

The huge merbau trees that we have are our heritage which we must preserve at

all cost.

We must never let the wonderful tropical forests that we are blessed with be

victims of modernisation and greed.
