Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Abi Musa Asa'ari Mohamed Nor sent the notice to the company, giving it 14 days to stop the activity. A source with the modern agriculture project said the company has agreed to abide by the order but asked for time to relocate the dogs. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had launched the project last year to upgrade the agriculture sector. Early this year, the Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry signed agreements with 21 local companies to take part in the project. However, about a week after the signing ceremony, people living close to the project sites complained that one company had brought in scores of dogs that included Rottweilers, Dobermans and German Shepherds, which the residents feared could pose a danger to children. Recent incidents of dog attacks on children and adults which were reported in the media increased their fears. They said they did not see a connection between dogs and agriculture. The project management source said the company was keeping 48 dogs. The source said the agreement with the ministry had stipulated that the main activity of the company was to rear ostriches for the local and export markets. Its side activities would be to breed animals as pets and to carry out agro-tourism projects. The source said the project management had given verbal warnings to the company that the breeding of dogs was not in line with its agreed main activity under the modern agricultural project. – Bernama <p> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2004 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
