A few months ago, I was in contact with a woman, Maryanne, who was

trying to care for horses in poor health conditions on her own (she

is an equine expert). At first, she was caring for horses that -

she later found out - were earmarked for slaughter. She offered

$3,000 per horse, but the restaurants pay much more, and the owner

told her " no " . Because she knew she could not help those horses,

she has now focused entirely on another horse/wild animal owner.

She left this message in my guestbook - and I know that she is

desperate for help.

Being new at animal welfare/rescue/etc, and being in Okinawa where

there is no support from any international organizations (which we

desperately need), I am unsure of how to assist her.

I am copying her letter below (with permission)-

Thank you for any input you can offer.

" I am a teacher here and I spend all of my COLA caring for a variety

of animals in Yomitan and in my apartment. The real owners try to

help with the cost of some of the food, but I think we are dealing

with ignorance. Many people get a horse/pony and do not know proper

equine care. I take care of these animals twice a day seven days a

week. There is a female Japanese Snow Monkey that is in a small

cage. I know the owner probably would sell her. I would LOVE to find

a much larger " cage " if he would not sell her. I feed her

strawberries, carrots, grapes, raisins, in addition to the food she

gets from the owner. It is overwhelming sometimes to think of the

magnitude of the neglect here on the island. "
