Licence to catch snakes in Kedah

ALOR STAR: The Kedah Wildlife Department is offering temporary licences to snake

catchers in a move to control the population of the reptile.

Department director Rahim Ahmad said the licences being offered would be for

trapping ular senduk (cobra), ular tedung selar (king cobra) and ular sawa

(python).

“We wanted to get the public involved so that we can speed up the process of

catching the snakes,” he said.

“The licence costs RM50 and allows the holders to catch up to 50 snakes in

three months.

“The snakes caught could then be sold to authorised dealers,” he said

yesterday, adding that the licences would be issued under the Wildlife

Protection and National Park Act 1972.

Rahim said that of the eight dealers authorised to trade snakes, six were in

Padang Serai, one in Kubang Pasu and another in Baling.

“We do not have any quota on the number of licences to catch snakes,” he said.

On the case of the 18-month-old toddler in Kampung Kuala Janing who died of a

snakebite last month, Rahim said residents should ensure that their surroundings

were kept clean and cleared of shrubs and bushes in order not to attract snakes.

“Snakes feed on rats.

“They thrive in surroundings that are not kept clean,” he said.

Those who wish to apply for snake catching licences can get the forms at Level

9, Wisma Persekutuan in Alor Star. For more information, call 04-730 2245.
