Be reasonable Shah Alam City Council urged

After reading about the new regulations imposed on dog owners in Shah Alam, I

can no longer contain my frustration.

The rules implemented by the Shah Alam City Council are unreasonable and might

not be effective in the long run.

Take, for example, the need for written consent from neighbours.

How will this curb irresponsible pet ownership? What happens if the neighbour

who gave his consent moved out and the new neighbour objects to your having

dogs? Are the owners supposed to send their beloved pets to the SPCA or risk

being fined?

Another ruling states that only those living in corner lots and bungalows can

keep dogs.

What has the size of the house compound got to do with pet ownership? What

about toy dogs that are tiny? How much space do they need? More often than not,

these small pets live inside the house and are part of the family.

Do the decision-makers in the council consider all factors which will affect

current and future dog owners in the long run? How can they make rash decisions

like this?

It appears to the majority of us that the decisions were made on the basis of

the recent dog attacks.

All sources of information – books, magazines, websites and expert views –

point to the fact that dogs or rather all animals attack when they are disturbed

or feel intimidated. Humans will react aggressively too when we feel

intimidated.
