Keeping of dogs not linked to racial unity

YOUR report, “Special courses for dog owners”, (The Star, May 5) quoted chairman

of the Selayang Baru Anti-Dog Association Low Kim Hean as saying “keeping of

dogs is bad for unity in our multi-racial society.”

It is a sad day for Malaysia indeed when racial unity is cited as a reason to

ban the keeping of dogs as pets.

Low's statement shows his ignorance of social issues and trivialises the

factors that contribute to racial unity in Malaysia.

Low has the right to dislike dogs but claiming it is a “racial unity” issue

shows the association's desperation to win support.

Banning dogs as pets has nothing to do with racial unity but a lot to do with

the association's members forcing their personal prejudices on other Selayang

Baru residents.
