Tay’s letter, “Dog owner ‘barks’ at double standards”, (The Star, May 6). I have been a resident of Subang Jaya for the last 10 years after having lived in Australia since childhood and my family there raises dogs as pets. Therefore, while I can agree with the concerns that a responsible dog owner may have regarding the special courses being demanded of municipal councils, I disagree with him on the extent of the problem, which he described as “the indiscretions of a few dog owners.” One has only to walk around in the early morning or late evening to see dog owners allowing their dogs to indiscriminately “do their business” on someone else’s front garden or in a public park or urinate on the tyres of a parked car. Barking dogs are also a constant annoyance. There are even some dog owners who let their dogs loose and these dogs, as well as stray dogs, can often be seen foraging through rubbish bins or bags that have not been properly placed. Dr Tay also asks why cats do not need a licence. Well, it could be that cats do not cause life-threatening injuries that require hundreds of stitches and a lifetime of trauma to their victims. In other countries, dog owners are required to be more responsible about the care of their dogs and that includes picking and cleaning up their dogs’ mess and ensuring the dogs are on a leash outdoors. Of course, the councils have better things to focus their energies on. But unless and until dog owners can ensure that their pets do not have such a large impact on their surrounding environment, I say “good job” to the local councils. AZMAN ABDUL RAHMAN, Subang Jaya.
