The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres), a Singaporean-founded charitable organisation will be hosting this event with more than forty presentations from governmental and non- governmental delegates from across the Asian region and internationally. The conference is sponsored by Animals Asia Foundation, Animal People, Best Friends Animal Society, Extra Trading/Brightlife Australia, Humane Society International, In Defense of Animals, North Shore Animal League International, SPCA Hong Kong and SPCA Singapore. GOVERNMENTAL & NON-GOVERNMENTAL COLLABORATIONS WITH A DIFFERENCE Asia for Animals Singapore 2005 seeks to consolidate governmental and non-governmental experiences in the region with an eye to developing new strategies and facilitating change. Correspondingly, there is also a significant emphasis upon collaborations—both between different NGOs and also between governmental and non- governmental institutions. Representatives and experts from across the region will be debating the following topics: Disaster Relief & Recovery; ZooCheck Work in Asia; Stray Animal Management; Rescue Centre Operations; Farm Animal Welfare; The Role of Government Agencies in Animal Protection; Tackling the Illegal Wildlife Trade; Media & Communication Strategies for NGOs (Full details of main session topics behind) HANDS-ON WORKSHOP SERIES Aside from the main session presentations, a series of related, hands on, expert-facilitated workshops will be incorporated into the programme. The objective of these workshops is to discuss of methods, strategies and solutions for animal advocacy/conservation workers in Asia in a more intimate environment. Registration for these workshops is on the first day of the conference. FILMS THAT MADE A DIFFERENCE Wildlife Asia (www.wildlifeasia.org) will also present an evening of films and shorts by members of Filmmakers For Conservation under the title " Films That Made a Difference " , with special guest, Hardy Jones of BlueVoice.org. Each documentary, made by acclaimed filmmakers such as Mike Pandey, Shekar Dattatri and Hardy Jones, will illustrate how powerful the media can be in creating positive change for the benefit of conservation. ASIA FOR ANIMALS, MAIN SESSION PRESENTATION TOPICS 1. Disaster Relief & Recovery This session will highlight the effects of human-inflicted and natural disasters upon animals, and the immediate priorities and efforts needed to provide relief and rescue operations in such cases. Examples of relief efforts during the recent tsunami will also be discussed. 2. ZooCheck Work in Asia This session focuses upon captive animals and the measures and/or solutions available for improving their living conditions. One objective is to compile a comprehensive checklist for ZooCheck work. Another is to explore strategies for negotiation and synergistic working relationships with the zoos in the region. 3. Stray Animal Management Topics to be debated in this session include: The relative effectiveness of the trap/neuter release programme for stray animals; The viability of no-kill animal facilities in Asia; The advantages and disadvantages of various animal facility models; Methods of education and outreach pertaining to stray animal management and welfare. This session will be followed-up with a workshop. 4. Rescue Centre Operations At stake in this session are standards, guidelines and perspectives for the general operations of rescue centres. Related topics include: Basic needs and individuated care of different species; enrichment programmes; rehabilitation programmes and reintroduction programmes. 5. Farm Animal Welfare This session will debate current industrial farming methods in Asia and consider proposals for more humane alternatives. The economic, social and cultural viability of vegetarian or vegan lifestyle campaigns in different Asian contexts will also be discussed. 6. The Role of Government Agencies in Animal Protection This session welcomes the input of officials from various government bodies with a stake in animal protection, welfare and conservation in Asia. Case studies highlighting possible productive alliances between governmental and non-governmental agencies will be explored 7. Tackling the Illegal Wildlife Trade This session will provide an overview of the illegal wildlife trade in the respective Asian countries. Key areas of intervention and how these areas might be prioritised will be discussed, alongside an evaluation of methods of enforcement, information dissemination (education, outreach), and undercover work. 8. Media & Communication Strategies for NGOs Delegates from the international TV and print media, advertising and PR agencies will discuss strategies for NGOs attempting to get their concerns through to the media, governments, sponsors and the general public, in our time of information-saturation and compassion fatigue. This session will be followed by a workshop wherein NGO representatives can pitch their ideas to a panel of media, advertising and PR representatives. (Workshop attendance is limited).
