Oh, deer, what next?

BY ROYCE CHEAH

KUALA LUMPUR: A female deer caused a stir when it ran into a house in Taman

Mulia, Ampang Jaya, and raised concerns about other wild animals doing the same

and hurting people.

Puan Hajah, who alerted The Star of the roaming doe yesterday, said she was

worried about the safety of residents in the area.

“It may be a deer, which is harmless, but what next? Where there are deer,

there are tigers, monkeys and snakes.

“The development around the area (Bukit Antarabangsa) has to stop or we'll find

more animals coming into our area as they have nowhere else to go,” she

said, adding that the sight of monkeys run over by cars was becoming more

common.

Puan Hajah's son Ahmad Danial Ariffin, 19, said four stray dogs had attacked

the doe when it wandered into the area.

He noticed the animal forcing its way through an opening at the gate of a

house.

“I was quite surprised to see it, and ran over to see what I could do. The deer

had bites on its face, and its legs were bleeding,” Ahmad Danial said.

S. Sudarshan, 15, said he came out of his house on hearing the commotion to

find the doe rushing towards him and into the house.

“It ran straight into the storeroom and stayed there,” he said.

He said he alerted his father while Ahmad Danial called Zoo Negara officers.

“My father managed to calm the animal down and we moved it to the back of the

house,” Sudarshan said.

Officers from the Wildlife and National Parks Department came and took the

animal away.

An officer said the doe would be sent to the Malacca Zoo later.

I believe that whoever lives in this area where there are wildlife problems

should try to make improvements for the people and animals by writing to

officials, contacting animal welfare organizations and such.
