Knee-jerk reaction to dog attack

TRUE to the Malaysian way, there is now the typical knee-jerk over-reaction to

the dog attack on a child.

So far, there have been calls for banning the rearing of dogs, for dog owners

to get their neighbours’ permission and for them to attend compulsory courses.

I view these as discrimination against dog lovers. Dogs rarely attack unless

they are provoked or feel threatened.

I had a German Shepherd which was like a pussycat. She did not mind children

pulling her tail and would allow small children to sit on her back. She liked to

sit at the gate and watch the world go by and would greet friendly

schoolchildren by wagging her tail.

Alas, her only fault was a deep hatred for moving bicycles. Why? Some children

who live nearby would frequently ram their bicycles repeatedly at my gate to

provoke her.

It was such fun to them and they would squeal and laugh at the result. I

shudder to think what would have happened if the gate had been rammed open. It

is these brats who should attend a course on proper behaviour.

I still miss this bitch who died at a ripe old age. I now have another

“dangerous” German Shepherd that likes to kiss people right on the lips.

As for asking permission from neighbours before a licence is issued to dog

owners, I would like to suggest that the same be applied to potential cat

owners. My neighbour’s cats cause a great big stink in my garden!

Ultimately, it is being a responsible pet owner, be it dogs, cats, rabbits,

chickens or turtles that one keeps.
