Dear Activist:

 

the Russian Consulate has asked for monetary

comensation from the state for circus fire tragedy. it

is sad that insted of geting the circus to pay up for

upbringing and care of 2 dogs alive and snaping a huge

fine they ask compensation from indian taxpayer money

(SIC!!!). i think we must write to russians to clean

up their act.

MUMBAI, APRIL 8: A First Information Report (FIR) has

finally been lodged by the Russian Consulate on behalf

of the Russian Circus following Monday’s fire tragedy,

which took the lives of four sea lions, 10 dogs and

seven cats. The consulate has also demanded monetary

compensation from the Maharashtra government.

 

Acting Consul General of Russia Irina Bashkirova said:

‘‘On Wednesday evening, we sent a note to the

Maharashtra government asking for a thorough

investigation to be carried out into the tragedy. We

have also demanded a compensation for the loss of

property and animals.’’

 

Though she did not divulge the compensation amount

asked for, Bashkirova added that the top circus

executives have alleged that they have been cheated by

an Indian events management company ‘Choice Events &

Trade Pvt Ltd’— the company’s executives are currently

absconding-which was in charge of managing the circus

shows in Mumbai. Arson and sabotage have also been

alleged by the circus executives in the police

complaint.

 

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 9), Amitabh Gupta,

confirmed the FIR and said: ‘‘So far, the police has

taken down the statements of the Russian consulate and

circus directors. We will also be adding the

statements of the Indian animal activists.’’

 

Animal activists, meanwhile, said that circus

officials are equally to blame for the tragedy. ‘‘We

got no cooperation from the Russian veterinary doctor

at the Chitrakoot grounds, when we had gone there on

March 6 to inspect the condition of the caged

animals,’’ said chief functionary of People for the

Ethical Treatment of Animals (India), Anuradha

Sawhney.

 

She added that once the circus had closed down on

March 27, the animals should also have been safely

transported back to Russia. ‘‘It was a mess, thanks to

the Russian Circus and their event managers,’’ said
