The animals, which took part in a tour of India, were due to be shipped back to Moscow on Thursday, Mstislav Zapashnoi said in a statement, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported. " Russia's state circus company voices its resolute protest and demands a thorough investigation as we think this incident was nothing less than arson, " Zapashnoi said, adding that the company's Indian partners, officials of the Choice Events and Trade firm, disappeared along with customs and veterinarian documents. One of the circus's employees, Evgeniya Bessmertnova, meanwhile said that the building offered the circus for its performances and animal storage " lacked even an air conditioner in this terrible heat, there were no safety measures, there was horrible lack of hygiene. Preliminary reports indicated that four sea lions, ten dogs and seven cats were feared to have perished in the fire. Officials said the fire broke around 3 pm at the Chitrakoot Maidan, at Andheri, and several animals are believed to have succumbed to burn injuries. The fire brigade officials rushed two fire engines and two water tankers, officials said the details were still coming in and the cause of the fire was still not known. 'Russian Circus' was caught in a controversy when an animal welfare group had moved the Bombay High Court challenging its shows on the ground that rules had been violated.
