Russian circus animals burn to death in India

Agence France-Presse

Moscow, April 5, 2005|12:06 IST

Four sea lions, 10 dogs and seven cats belonging to Russia's state

circus burnt to death in a fire in India, where they were waiting for

transport back to Moscow, the circus chief said.

The animals, which took part in a tour of India, were due to be

shipped back to Moscow on Thursday, Mstislav Zapashnoi said in a

statement, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported.

" Russia's state circus company voices its resolute protest and

demands a thorough investigation as we think this incident was

nothing less than arson, " Zapashnoi said, adding that the company's

Indian partners, officials of the Choice Events and Trade firm,

disappeared along with customs and veterinarian documents.

One of the circus's employees, Evgeniya Bessmertnova, meanwhile said

that the building offered the circus for its performances and animal

storage " lacked even an air conditioner in this terrible heat, there

were no safety measures, there was horrible lack of hygiene. "

Press Trust of India

Mumbai, April 4, 2005|19:52

A major fire broke out at the popular 'Russian Circus', currently

performing at suburban Andheri in which several animals were feared

dead, fire brigade sources said.

Preliminary reports indicated that four sea lions, ten dogs and seven

cats were feared to have perished in the fire.

Officials said the fire broke around 3 pm at the Chitrakoot Maidan,

at Andheri, and several animals are believed to have succumbed to

burn injuries.

The fire brigade officials rushed two fire engines and two water

tankers, officials said the details were still coming in and the

cause of the fire was still not known.

'Russian Circus' was caught in a controversy when an animal welfare

group had moved the Bombay High Court challenging its shows on the

ground that rules had been violated. The court ultimately allowed the

circus to perform.
