We have been busy following up with the Director of Public Health, Government of

Tamil Nadu about the Animal Birth Control - Anti Rabies (ABC-AR) programmes

being planned for Nagapattinam. Dr. Vishnu Sneller of the CDC, USA has been

working closely with the DPH in Nagapattinam after the tsunami and has been

following up with the DPH and us since her return re setting up the ABC

programme.

We are planning to inaugurate the Nagapattinam programme by the District

Collector, Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, who is a vet himself and has worked closely

with the Blue Cross in our Chennai ABC programme. WSPA will be funding the

Nagapattinam programme and we are now planning to take up Cuddalore also

simultaneously before we another crisis on our hands. We are working on the

funding details for this programme.

Our close co-ordination with the Tamil Nadu Red Cross has led to a very positive

development. Their Honorary Secretary, Ms. Bhargavi Devendra, has suggested that

all the students in their home nursing training programmes for nurses will

include a 10 day programme at the Blue Cross of India, both at the surgery and

out-patient departments. We have also hired one of the graduates of the Red

Cross home nursing training programme who works in our surgery. In a country

where the concept of trained animal handlers is virtually unknown (even in

research laboratories), this will be a boon to animal welfare groups, especially

those involved in the spay-and-return programme.
