Animals acts return to Russian circus Court vacates stay on performing animals; angry activists to re-appeal. http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=121642 Express News Service Mumbai, March 17: THE Bombay High Court has vacated the stay order on the Russian State Circus Company’s (Rosgoscirk) usage of performing animals at their Circus on Ice running in the city. The 17-act show will now reinstate the three acts involving sea lions, cats and Eskimo dogs. The Rosgoscirk had used these animals in other Indian cities but ran into a roadblock when they came to Mumbai in late February. Animal rights activists had filed a petition to stop the use of performing animals in the circus. The RSCC has now managed to get the stay order lifted, on the grounds that the regulations on performing animals apply to Indian circuses and not foreign ones, said a spokesperson for the circus. He also added that the show’s run might be extended by a couple of weeks from its initial closing date of March 27. However, Anuradha Sawhney, chief functionary, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, alleged that the circus did not have the quarantine papers for the animals in order and, in fact, had been ordered by the Calcutta High Court to hand over the sea lions. “They lied in their petition to the court,’’ said Sawhney, adding that sheand Dharmesh Solanki of People For Animals , had carried out the required Animal Welfare Board of India inspection on March 6—which the circus told the court never took place. PETA and six other animal rights’ organisations now plan to stage protests at each show while they re-appeal to the court.
