Wildlife enforcement officers get more powers

 

 

PUTRAJAYA: Wildlife enforcement officers have been given powers to make arrest

outside their jurisdiction in a bid to clamp down on poaching and smuggling.

 

In the past, due to their acquaintance with the locals, the officers & #147;did

not like & #148; to make arrest even though they had information on poachers and

smugglers in their areas.

 

Wildlife and National Parks Department enforcement director Misliah Mohamed

Basir said with the formation of the Wildlife Crime Unit last month, officers

would be empowered to catch the culprits outside their areas.

 

& #147;They can call officers from other states to move in and catch those

responsible, & #148; she said.

 

Misliah said the department was now targeting poachers who came from other

countries.

 

& #147;This is because demand for wildlife meat and other products comes from

outside Malaysia.

 

& #147;We have received reports from the Thai authorities that they have been

stopping at least one illegal consignment of wildlife from Malaysia each

week, & #148; she added.
