In January 2004 a dog belonged to Mr Munasinghe who lives at

no5,Pitiyagedara Bemmulla was immunised with the rabies injection which was

injected during the antirabies campaign organised by the Health Department.

The dog developed rabies symptoms on the 1st of July 2004 and it attacked

the dogs in the neighbourhood and that dog and all the dogs which were

bitten were destroyed.

How can this happen ?

A child named Seroni Kaushalya from Galneva was bitten by the pet dog and

the pet died and the parents rushed her to the Anuradhapura Hospital and as

the human rabies injections were not available they took her to a native

doctor as the child complained that the leg was paining they have taken her

to the Kurunegala Hospital.

The parents didn`t know that the injections were available from the

company. The girl died of rabies in August 2004.

In Matara also a boy died of rabies .The injections were not available in

the hospital.

In 2004 a little girl from Colombo named Dilini was bitten by a street dog

and the parents rushed her to the Lady Ridgeway chilren Hospital.

Then the girl was injected with human rabies injection and the parents

complained that they were not given the dates for the follow up treatment .'

That was really necessary as the little girl was bitten on the head.

The girl developed rabies symptoms and died.
