After a concerned citizen alerted PETA to a squalid roadside menagerie housing primates, moon bears and snakes at the southwest entrance to the Cu Chi tunnels outside Ho Chi Minh City, PETA travelled to Vietnam to investigate. PETA discovered that the animals were confined to filthy cages without food or water. Among the animals PETA found suffering in appalling conditions were the following: .. A baboon who has lived alone for four years in a faeces-strewn cage measuring 7 feet by 5 feet by 6 feet .. Two 7-foot-long boa snakes confined to a cage measuring 5.5 feet by 7 feet, with no room to move and deprived of water .. A gibbon who has lived alone in his cage-measuring 7 feet by 6 feet-for years, forced to live on wire fencing suspended off the ground .. Three monkeys, missing large amounts of hair all over their bodies, with only a broken swing for enrichment .. As many as three large moon bears in a cage measuring 15 feet by 10 feet. An adjacent cage houses one lone moon bear who is visibly suffering from a toothache. The animals at Cu Chi tunnels are in immediate need of water, clean cages, and proper veterinary care. One animal died shortly after we were alerted to this situation. More will die if they are not moved immediately. Please contact the Vietnam Embassy in your country (UK and US contact information provided below), as well as the commander of the Military Headquarters at Ho Chi Minh City, and ask that the government of Vietnam immediately arrange to transfer the animals to a safe, reputable sanctuary where they can live out their lives in peace: United Kingdom His Excellency Trinh Duc Du Vietnamese Ambassador to the UK The Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and North Ireland 12 Victoria Road London W8 5RD 020 7937 1912 <consular consular United States His Excellency Nguyen Tam Chien Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the United States Embassy of Vietnam 1233 20th St. N.W., Ste. 400 Washington, DC 20036 +1 202 861 0737 <info info Vietnam Mr. Le Minh Thang Commander of the Military Headquarters at Ho Chi Minh City PP8 Cu Xa Bac Hai, Ba Vi, Ward 15, District 10 +84 903826560 (mobile) (People outside of the US and Japan can also text a message to this mobile number.
