There is monsoon rain in Sri lanka

Genuine thought about the welfare of the animals I am sending some extracted

details from the hand book of the ABC method used by Help in Suffering

shelter in India

The choice of approach is influenced greatly by the surgeon`s experiences

the size of the dog and her reproductive status.

A flank approach is preferred in

1.Non pregnant animals

2.Particularly fractious animals that will be very difficult to wound check

3 pups less than 6months

Mid line is prefered

1.Pyometra

2Fat and heavy ,well muscled bitches

Post operative care

Dogs are checked by a vet once daily

We prefer to hold the bitches for at least five days after surgery for

following reasons

Bitches are returning to a demanding environment they are active and

interacting with other dogs ,trying to re-establish their territory and

obtain food and their environment is dirty.

---------

However small the wound ,it is still a potential opening into the abdominal

cavity .The bitches benefit from the extra days kennel rest and food

provision, allowing increased wound healing and decreased pain prior to release.

We have observed that if complications occur many are evident by 5-8 days

post -op.The main complications

1Swellings due to-more severe cat gut reactions

2Reaction around vicryl skin sutures

3Animals chewing sutures out

Releasing times

Puppies 3 days

Uncomplicated surgery and healing 5days post op

Long mid line spays 7-10 days

Bitches in season 7-8 days post op

We prefer to hold these animals longer to allow hormone levels to settle and

increased wound healing before release .This is to avoid repeated mating

which would cause trauma to recently operated tissues.

The monsoon season moistens the wound and incease s the infection risk.

Releasing

The dogs are given a final check as they are loaded.

It is important to release the dogs in a quiet street .

Only two dogs are released at a time at the same spot in order to minimise

aggravation and fighting furthermore to minimise th objections of the

general public.

After the ride in the jeep it is normal for many dogs to be salivating .

Onlookers should be made aware that the salivation has been brought about by

the vehicle ride and does not indicate the dogs are rabid.
