Lorry trying to smuggle 94 pangolins stopped

 

 

PADANG BESAR: An anti-smuggling unit seized 294 pangolins worth RM17,640 from a

lorry bound for Thailand.

 

The lorry was stopped near Kampung Melayu, two kiloemetres from the Thai

border, at 3am yesterday and its 37-year-old driver detained on suspicion of

smuggling.

 

The pangolins, considered to be endangered species, were hidden among

vegetables and fruits.

 

Unit commander Deputy Supt Rooslan Radzi said a syndicate was believed to have

caught the animals in Kelantan before they were taken to Padang Besar near the

border.

 

& #147;Pangolins are in great demand across the border. They are made into soup

and are said to have high nutritional value, & #148; he said.

 

The driver is likely to be charged under the Wildlife Protection Act.
