Over 100 pigs found dead at Malacca farm

BY LEE YUK PENG

MALACCA: More than 100 pigs at a farm in Kampung Paya Mengkuang, about 40km from

here, have died in the past four days.

Veterinary Services director-general Datuk Dr Hawari Hussein said samples from

the carcasses and animal feed have been taken for tests.

The results were expected in a few days.

The department has also ordered that no pigs be transported out of the farm.

& #147;Nothing can come out from this farm until we know what is the

matter, & #148; he said yesterday.

Dr Hawari said the deaths were confined to only one farm.

Farm owner Loo Poo, 50, said the pigs which had eaten the feed he had bought

earlier this month had died while the younger pigs, which did not eat the feed,

were fine.

The feed was produced by a local feedmill here.

& #147;I have stopped feeding the pigs with the feed. I have also buried all the

dead pigs outside Paya Mengkuang.

Loo, who lodged a report at the Kuala Sungai Baru police station on Sunday,

told the Veterinary Services Department that 260 pigs had consumed the feed.

Na Tian Lam, chairman of the pig unit of the Malacca branch of the Federation

of Livestock Farmers Association Malaysia, said pork from other sources was

still safe for consumption and the public need not worry as this was an isolated

case.
