Guest guest
New Straits Times - 20th Jan 2005 Camels for Hari Raya Haji sacrifice It will be a Hari Raya Aidiladha with a difference for some 10,000 Muslims in Pangkor. They will be feasting on camel instead of the normal treat of cattle and goat meat. Three camels, each weighing about 600kg, will be slaughtered as part of the korban (sacrifice) ritual at the compound of the island's main mosque, the Teluk Raja Bayang Masjid in Kampung Masjid. Between 15 and 20 volunteers will help slaughter the camels sponsored by Mesra Feri Sdn Bhd, one of the two ferry companies servicing the island. Mesra Feri assistant general manager Rais Othman said this was the first time camels were being slaughtered for Hari Raya Haji for the Muslim community in Pangkor. He said the five-year-old camels, bought from Agristar Exotic in Machang, Kelantan, cost RM25,000 each and had arrived by lorry at the Lumut jetty two nights ago before being ferried to Pangkor yesterday morning. " The camels are now at the mosque compound. They will be slaughtered immediately after the Hari Raya Haji prayers. Each household will receive about one kilogramme of camel meat, " he said. Rais said the company would also sponsor three cows on the second day of Hari Raya Haji. " Camel meat is a rarity. People do not get to eat camel meat every day. It is a luxury. It is also lean and nutritious. " _______________ Block pop-up ads with MSN Toolbar. http://toolbar.msn.com.my/
