TSUNAMI RELIEF

 

" Working to save lives "

 

Dr. Cyril and Dr. Prabhakar with the rescued turtle.

 

This injured turtle was spotted near the famous " Velankanni " church in

an island, which was created by the tsunami. It was first spotted by a

member of a local resort rescue team who were searching and bringing to

shore the bodies of the victims of tsunami. The information was passed

to Dr. Cyril, who reached the place to rescue the turtle. By the time

our rescue team reached the spot local people were trying to kill the

" bad omen " , which had come along with the misfortune of the tsunami. In

the local language the villagers says " Aamai varukidavum Aamain

varukidavum onnumeai " ( " The place where a turtle comes and the king's

henchmen come are the same " ) . A shallow creek about 100 meters had been

created by the tsunami with water almost reaching the waist. Dr. Cyril

had no other option than crossing the creek before the villagers did so.

After crossing the creek and towing the turtle to safety he found that

the turtle was severely dehydrated and had a wound in the abdomen area.

It was not a wise idea to leave the turtle in the open. He decided to

travel back to " Chidambaram " , 150 kms away where his base camp is

located. The turtle was given fluids and treated for the gash wounds and

is currently kept comfortable, in a bathtub filled with seawater. The

next day the team rented a hut on the beach to set up a simple turtle

rescue centre. " The wound is slowly healing, but the turtle is not out

of danger, we are closely monitoring it and it will be a satisfying

moment when we see it going back to the sea, " said Dr. Cyril.Note: Olive

Ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) are found in these coastal areas.

Many were washed onto the shore and killed by the impact of the waves.

The rescue team also reported the news that in many places people were

digging the nests in the sands to collect the eggs.

 

Team-I : Dr. Cyril's team attended to injured goats and cows. Two

truckloads of grass were being distributed among 6 villages and the

goats and cows are getting regular fodder. " Our work is taking on two

dimensions. In the night feeding un owned animals in broken down houses

or on seashore, in the day time healing affected people through the

human animal bond " Dr. Cyril in an SMS.

 

Helping animals at Port blair : A new path opens for the relief work.

Dr. Geeta is struggling alone at Port Blair (Capital of Andaman -Nicobar

islands) where she has single-handedly treated around 410 animals. Most

of her medicine supplies have run out including syringes. WILDLIFE S.O.S

® and FRIENDICOES -SECA have sent 3 huge boxes containing medicines

and disposable syringes by courier to her aid. She will be keeping in

close touch with us and working in close tandem with WILDLIFE S.O.S ®

and FRIENDICOES -SECA and she will be given any kind of assistance and

aid needed to continue the relief work from us. We salute her courage

and dedication.

 

 

 

WILDLIFE S.O.S ® & FRIENDICOES -SECA express their sincere gratitude

to their three teams who work hard through the day feeding and

medicating till midnight and then report the days activities so that the

generous donors will be aware of what is happening in the disaster

area. Also a special thanks to the volunteers who have taken these

wonderful photographs and the IT expert who spends his day rescuing

animals and at night designs and distribute the E-Mailer to let the

world know of the courage of the survivors both human and animal.

 

Dr.Arun and his team (Team-II) also continued the treatments and

feeding of animals in 8 villages. They ensured that the animals were

getting regular supply of fodder by outsourcing it from a nearby village.

 

Dr. Prabhakar's team (Team-III) visited five villages in Chidambaram

taluka, Killai, Pichavaram Boat House, Mollukudod, Chinnur, Pudhupet,

Parankaipettai. In all the villages sheep, goats cows buffalos, calves

were treated for abscesses on hooves and joints stomatitis, maggot

wounds, hypo calcemia and entertits. We fed orphan dogs & puppies with

pedigree dog food. At one time all these villages had very good

pastureland for grazing. The salt water has ruined this. The surviving

villagers are expecting compensation form the government. They asked me

to arranged fodder, water and vaccination for the animals. Meanwhile

goats from Akbarpetta, Velankani and Chamdur got a fresh feed of grass.

 

RED ALERT: Rumours of killing of dogs in Killipakam abound. Dr.

Prabhakar of Team -II will be checking it out with the authorities in

Cuddalore district and will inform the locals that it's against the law

to kill dogs. Dr.Cyril Roy is also meeting the authorities today in

Nagapattinam district to stop any such brutal action on their part.
