In the wake of this massive tsunami that has killed tens of thousands of people, Humane Society International (HSI) is receiving numerous reports from local humane organizations in the areas impacted by this terrible disaster. At this time, HSI is assessing the animal situations in Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, and Indonesia and working with our many international partners in the affected communities to deliver relief to animal victims and their caretakers. An HSI advance team is in Phuket helping with animal rescues and doing an assessment of what follow up work is required. The Phuket team is being headed by Sherry Grant, HSI's regional Director of HSI Asia. Accompanying her is Dr. Putu Listriani Wistawan who is co-founder and Chief of Veterinary Medicine at the Bali Street Dog Foundation. After making arrangements for follow up aid and support, the advanced team will then be heading to Sri Lanka. A separate team is being sent to Banda Aceh. This team is headed by Dr. Wayan Mudiarda, a senior veterinarian with the Bali Street Dog Foundation. Ms. Grant and Dr. Listriani, DVM, will meet up with them after Sri Lanka. For the most recent updates on HSI’s disaster relief operations in the field, visit the HSI Asia website at http://www.hsiasia.org/. HSI is receiving monetary donations to support our local partners to provide appropriate assistance. If you or someone you know is interested in donating to the Disaster Relief Fund, please visit our website at www.hsus.org . To send your gift by U.S. Mail, please make your check payable to HSUS Disaster Relief Fund and mail it to HSUS, Dept. DRF-Online, 2100 L Street, NW, Washington, DC 20037. Thank you for your concern for the animals.
