Some times the feeding and the treating of the animals goes on till midnight and the truck or a hut becomes their bed for the night ......... Team I : Fodder feeding was undertaken at Cherur, Velankini and Akaripattai. Since these were severely hit by the tsunami specially those who were devoted to the temple at Velankeni have a great need for solace and are finding it very difficult to reconcile themselves to the tragedy. " Ariammal " returned to her hut after several days of searching for her lost daughter to find instead her three dogs had returned " home " rather the place where the hut had existed. She requested Dr. Cyril for four loaves of bread to feed them. She said " at least the sea spared my three children even if it took my daughter " . Unfortunately it was too dark to take a photo of the happy scene. The grass is cut during the whole morning so the feeding goes on till late at night as the team moves from village to village feeding the animals that faithfully wait at their old " homes " . Team -II :Dr. Prabhakar arranged and distributed dry and green fodder at Pudhupet, Pudhupettai, specially to the free ranging cattle on the sea shore (over a 100 ) at Chinnur, Killai, Devanampattinam, Thazhanguda and Sothikuppam. More than fifteen families brought over 40 cows for treatment and over 150 goats were treated for dehydration and injuries. " Fortunately there are no incidents of people killing dogs reported in this parts of the Tsunami affected area " , reported Dr.Arun The district administration officials estimated that in Nagercoil and Thuckalay a total of 44 cattle, 228 goats & 3053 poultry is dead due to the disaster leading to a loss of Rupees around Rupees ten lacs. However twice the number of animals has survived. " It is our duty to feed and care for these un-owned animals till the survivors over come their fear of the sea and come back to begin their lives afresh, " said Dr. Arun, who is camping in that district and treating the affected animals. " Moreover, the free ranging cattle are not used to eating dry fodder, so we are arranging green fodder for them, which is a challenge in the Tsunami hit areas.
