Dead animals half buried in the white sand and 8 - 10 dogs feeding off the dead goats.....The Besant Nagar beach repeated the story, a whole village, humans and animals, their life's story washed away. At Pallavakkam Beach the villagers who had lived through the ordeal and fled to higher ground surrounded the team. They pulled forward 7 - 8 cows who were treated for bruises; their tethered goats had drowned. 15 - 20 surviving dogs all were lame or bruised and after suitable treatment the team moved on. A local informed them that several injured animals were lying at Nalangrai and Kovalam Estuary. Reaching there quickly the team gave first aid to dogs, cows and goats that had run to safety earlier than the humans. At Mayajal and Toll Plaza beaches nothing but large numbers of dead animals...buried some bodies, burnt others and hoped this would prevent the spread of infection as this was now an increasing concern. At Kannathur Reddikuppam they were joined by Ravi who was combing the beach hoping to find his lost pets. He had returned on the evening of the disaster to search for his motorcycle and pets, ten cats and five dogs. At that moment our alert paravet noticed a brown blob being washed ashore. It was a tiny mixed breed dog miraculously alive; terrified and shivering. It was promptly treated for shock and adopted by the local people. The team again advised everyone to bury or burn the carcasses on the beach and moved on. At Nainaarkuppam the sole surviving cow was treated for injuries and supporting bandages were used for her injuries. At Kovalam estuary otherwise known as Kuppam the villagers who survived had relied heavily on their poultry and goats all of which was destroyed. No medical help seems to have reached them and hence our team switched gears and medicated and treated the injuries of old people and children; strapped a broken rib for Selvaraj. The team decided to move into the smaller villages more into the interior in order to enquire into the well being of animals and humans. Several tales of how the animals had run to higher ground before the people knew what was happening and dogs washed off managed to swim back to shore. Can't count the number of lost lives, tourists, morning walkers, etc. Having covered 70 kilometers the team slept at Pondicherry The next morning they have moved to Cuddalore where the district collector has welcomed their help.
