Guest guest
Minor Sent to Juvenile jail for hunting wild animals Children usually run away at the sight of animals, especially wild animals. But Ram Dass, aged 12, a resident of Jahara Hazur village near Purhiran in Hoshiarpur district has become the youngest hunter in the records of the state Wild Life Department after being caught hunting wild animals, including Civet,Jungle cat,Hare and a jackal, in a forest near Krangna village ,on 30th Dec.He was produced in Juvenile Court at Ludhiana 0n3rd and 4th Jan. He was sent to the juvenile jail here by the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr Sarbhjit Singh Dhaliwal and an injured jackal recovered from his possession was today ordered to be shifted to Chhat Bir Zoo, Chandigarh. The boy was using traps devised by him and roamed the forest alone in search of animals. The trap was fixed on the ground and wild animals were attracted with the bait.when pouncing over bait, the animals’ paws get trapped, with the teeth of trap, piercing through the paw of animal. Besides the injured jackal, the Forest officials have recovered killed animals including a wild cat, a civet and a hare from his possession. The accused was carrying the dead and injured animals on his cycle. In his statement to the officials, the boy, belonging to a nomadic tribe, stated that he used to kill the animals for consuming and selling their meat and some body parts for mystic practices. Hunting and killing of jackal, civet and jungle cat was banned under the Schedule-II of the Wild Life protection Act 1972. The boy was spotted by some residents of Krangna village, who informed the police which referred the case to the Wild Life Department.A joint team of the police and the Wild Life Department laid a trap to catch the boy and managed to arrest him with the help of villagers. The mastermind behind this needs to be exposed as during winter season wild animals and Migratory Birds come down from hilly areas and various countries, to District Hoshiarpur, Ropar,Gurdaspur and some times to Ludhiana.Hunting goes unchecked due to lack of manpower and means in the wildlife Deptt.
