This is very distressing news - for so many people in such a wide area ...

Latest google news I read had 9,300 people dead and only-god-knows how many

more missing or injured ...

Not to mention the animals and environmental disaster ...

Our prayers and thoughts are with everyone ... hoping to hear better news

soon.

The gibbon sanctuary on Phuket is untouched by the Tsunami, as it lays a lot

higher above sea-level and is situated on the other side of the Phuket

Island. Things are as usual at the center.

A rescue team of the WFFT (Wildlife Friends of Thailand) is on Phuket at the

moment, but unfortunately only dead animals have been found. It seems that

the long tail macaques on the coast of Thailand have gone up the hills in

most cases, however other mammals living in the little that is left over of

the mangrove forests such as fishing cats and some deer have been seen

washed upon the shores by local people besides a large amount of cattle and

pigs. The impact on the already troubled population of sea-turtles that lay

eggs on the beaches at this time will probably be devastating.

Winston Churchill said: " We make a living by what we get but we make a life

by what we give " .

During this time of crisis, I was touched to hear a caller to Radio Mirchi -

98.3 FM - recount at 10.05 this morning that when he and his friends were

helping rescue people yesterday morning at the beach in Madras, a dog which

had just given birth that morning to six puppies grabbed one of them in her

mouth and watched helplessly while the other five were washed away. It then

proceeded to swim to higer ground with the sixth puppy.

The photograph in The Hindu of a fireman with a bedraggled kitten in his

hand and the help given by the police to our ambulances yesterday to rescue

animals reminded all of us that at times of crises, the best in people comes

out.
