Animal help foundation is a non-profit animal/bird welfare organization. We came

into existence on 18th June, 2001 and are based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. AHF is

for stray animals only and we provide round the clock medical attention to

ownerless, stray and abandoned animals absolutely free of charge. Our vehicles

attend to distress calls in and around Ahmedabad.

 

• As you may be aware, India is a land bound to its culture and traditions in a

rather strong manner. One of such culture oriented festival “Uttarayan” comes in

mid – January where people celebrate it by indulging in flying kites.

• The strings used to fly these kites are coated with glass powder to make them

sharper. Flying kites is a personal decision we cannot intrude with, as it is

deeply ingrained in culture.

• Most often the birds get entangled in these strings and often cut a wing and

therefore, are unable to fly, sadly for life.

• Ahmedabad is a place with the highest number of kites flown every year during

the month of January, which results in a reduction of 20% of the entire bird

population of the city, during one month. Kite flying also proves to be harmful

to the migratory birds that come here around this time.

 

Sadly, this traditional merry making proves to be a threat and mostly even fatal

for thousands of birds every year.

 

Since we at AHF are working towards creating betterment for this section of

society that includes animals and birds, it is of great concern to us to be able

to at least be successful in saving as many birds as we can.

 

In order to achieve our aim of saving as many lives we rescue, we have

spearheaded a campaign called Help the Birds – 2005”.

 

• This campaign has been a priority for us even in the past three years, but due

to limited sources out of the two and a half thousand calls we get, we are able

to attend to a maximum of five hundred. This year we have piloted a new strategy

where in we have managed to set up around thirty centers all over the city where

we shall attend to these rescue calls.

 

Our centers are manned by volunteers who feel that birds look better in the

skies, than in a cage with their wings cut off. These volunteers will be getting

basic first aid instructions to tend to the injured birds.
