Guest guest
I read " Despite common Western beliefs, Tibetans, including Tibetan monks, are generally not vegetarian, " and that " The Dalai Lama is not vegetarian. " http://www.purifymind.com/DalaiLamaVege.htm I believe a true Buddhist should not eat meat since one of the five Buddhist precepts is " Do not kill " . I believe the interpretation of " Do not kill " in relation to eating animals that have been killed is where some Buddhists have difficulty. There seems to be an interpretation of intent (killing by proxy where someone may eat the meat they are given because someone else gave it to them and it is rude to refuse the offering or the fact they did not kill the meat themselves and know nothing of who killed the meat or why it was killed). I believe that if one adheres to the precept that one should not kill, then eating the product of a kill is akin to agreeing that the killing was acceptable and allowable. If one supports the killing of a live being by eating the product of the killing, one is directly benefiting from the killing. If one benefited by the killing of a human being this would be seen as being a party to a murder or a crime in some way. This is just my interpretation and based on morals and ethics as I see them. Whether a Buddhist should eat an animal who died of natural causes is another issue. Perhaps animals that have died of natural causes should also be avoided since they may have died of disease and that is possibly akin to eating something toxic. Five Precepts 1.Do not kill 2.Do not steal 3.Do not lie 4.Do not be unchaste 5.Do not take drugs or drink intoxicants 1. I will be mindful and reverential with all life, I will not be violent nor will I kill. " If a person does not harm any living being. and does not kill or cause others to kill - that person is a true spiritual practitioner. " - The Dhammapada 2. I will respect the property of others, I will not steal. 3. I will be conscious and loving in my relationships, I will not give way to lust. 4. I will honor honesty and truth, I will not deceive. 5. I will exercise proper care of my body and mind, I will not be gluttonous nor abuse intoxicants. Guest guest
How many people professing to follow Judeo-Christian teachings can imagine that " Thou shalt not kill " might apply to not killng animals? ===== Personally, I believe a true Buddhist should not eat meat since one of the five Buddhist precepts is " Do not kill " . ===== " The cat did not respond. She did not believe in paraphrasing anybody. If people pursued this same feline wisdom, there'd be a lot fewer misunderstandings.
