26% of veterinarians use no painkillers in operations on dogs, cats

Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at 07:51 JST

TOKYO - A quarter of Japanese veterinarians use no painkillers in

operations on dogs and cats, believing them unnecessary and feeling

concern about their side effects, a survey of 6,600 veterinarians by

a study group on animal pain found Monday.

" Veterinarians and pet owners need to understand more about the pain

animals suffer, " said Yoshihisa Yamane, who led the study group. Some

vets who do not use painkillers on animals under their care believe

painkillers compromise the effects of treatment and do not see dogs

and cats show pain during operations such as castrations, said Ayako

Imai, a research team member and veterinarian. (Kyodo News)
