Japan to ban imports of 11 animals

Saturday, November 20, 2004 at 00:23 JST

TOKYO — Japan will ban importing, keeping, transferring and abandoning of 11

kinds of animals starting next spring to protect domestic agriculture and

ecosystems, Environment Ministry officials said Friday.

Raccoons are on the list for causing damage to farm products, Java mongooses

for eating protected species in the Okinawa area and three species of

monkeys due to fears they will breed with Japanese monkeys, they said.

Nutrias, Reeve's muntjacs and some kinds of squirrels and foxes will also be

prohibited.
