Elsa Nature Conservancy (Japan), Earth Island

Institute (USA), and One Voice (France) have been

making a concerted effort and working with some local

people so the local fishing community would move from

dolphin drive hunt to dolphin/whale watching. And it

has been quite successful; there hasn't been a drive

hunt in Futo for the last 5 years. But it's happening

again and we need your help!

Please read below alert from Elsa and take action.

-------------

Responding to an order placed by members of the

dolphin captivity industry, the fishermen of Futo,

Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan have driven a pod of about

100 bottlenose dolphins into Futo harbor.

The harbor has been sealed with a net so that the

dolphins can't escape. Divers from at least two

Japanese aquariums will arrive in Futo tomorrow

morning to select between 20 and 30 " show-quality "

dolphins for their facilities.

Some of the dolphins will be killed for research. What

will happen to the remaining dolphins is uncertain at

this point.

With this capture there is a great risk that Futo will

follow in the footsteps of Taiji and become a supplier

of dolphins for Zoos and Aquariums in Japan and

abroad.

In order to prevent this, worldwide protests are

needed immediately.

Please urge the authorities to let the captured

dolphins go. And ask that no further dolphin captures

will take place in Japan in the future.

WE NEED TO FLOOD THE AUTHORITIES WITH LETTERS BEFORE

THE AQUARIUMS ARRIVE ON THE SCENE.

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

Public Schools throughout Japan need to be notified as well, to

allow the children to VOICE THEIR OPINIONS!!!

The excuse the Okinawa Zoo gives ZAP (Zoo Action Program) is that

they " do it for the children " .......... >:o\

Well, I think the children - with environmental enlightenment via

class instruction and guest speakers - would be outraged that

injuries to animals are done in THEIR NAME!

I will get the word out via our American schools here in Okinawa,

but am not sure I can reach out to Japanese Schools.. I can try,

though!
