We have been getting information that during Navratra and Diwali days

practitioners of Witchcraft and occult kill animals like Owls, cats, Monkeys,

Jackals etc. to please the mystic gods. The owls blood and paws are used by

these resulting in death of these creatures, which are environment and farmer

friendly. In this connection Two large Owls (Rock Eagle Owl) were rescued from a

tantrik today. We were informed that a person was selling ‘Taweezs’ near

G.T.Road, we tried to inform Forest officials . When we went there a person who

was carrying a box having two owls was going after winding his roadside outlet.

when he was asked to accompany ,so that he may be handed over to forest

Deptt.,he fled away leaving his box containing two owls tied with Rope to the

leg of each owl. These are huge streaked, dark brown, long eared with orange

ireses.they have long and very broad wings. These fully-grown owls’ wings have

been clipped, so that they may not fly. These are protected under Wildlife

Protection Act 1972(amended 2002) and are categorised under Schedule IV.

These inhabit well-wooded areas, particularly with ravines, large canals and

other wetlands, forts, ruins and rocky, bushy isolated places.these are

nocturnal in habit and roost in large trees, rocks and on ground under cover. It

feeds on rodents, reptiles and birds etc.

These have been kept at People For Animals’ Animal & Bird Shelter (Jeev Kalyan

Kendra and Bhagwan Mahavir Abhayshala),at Khwajke, Rahon Road Ludhiana.Forest

officials have been informed and asked to take necessary steps for their

rehabilitation.Since they can not fly properly due to clipped wings, these have

to kept in custody for some time, till they become fit to fly.
