Guest guest
Hi, I have the information from the last aapn digest asking for people to write opposing the proposed dog massacre in Cixi, Nibo, Zhejiang (three " States " ? or " Provinces " ? in China). Apparently the issues are complex including dogs exposed to rabies and dogs produced for meat and the lack of vaccination in meat dogs (not usually enforced by authorities since the " meat dogs " are usually contained?) and the fact some people have not vaccinated their pet dogs against rabies. Can someone with knowledge of the issue put some main points on the list to include in present and future letter writing? Points I am interested in (other people may have other questions) 1. Whether dog eating is a current or traditional trend in Chinese culture and how far back in history dog eating goes (I remember hearing of Chows bred for meat in China's past history?) 2. The cost and availability of rabies vaccines in China 3. Is there an easy way of determining whether dogs have been vaccinated against rabies eg eat tattooing? (we don't have rabies vaccinations for dogs in Australia at present because we are still assumed to be rabies free). 4. The legality (current) of the status of pet dogs in China (Are pet dogs legal throughout China and in the above provinces are licenses required for pet dogs and is there a blackmarket trade in pet dogs?). I remember seeing a documentary on an illegal trade in pet dogs in China or was it Hong Kong. 5. Is there a stray dog problem in the provinces listed above. Sorry for all the questions but I wish to write a letter based on knowledge of the subject I am writing about. Perhaps someone could post a sample letter on the issue with facts and not just rhetoric. If there is a website containing the information I have asked for, please post it to the list Kind regards, Marguerite (see below) >>Fri, 15 Oct 2004 00:22:50 -0700 >>ProMED-mail >>Merritt Clifton <anmlpepl >>Rabies outbreak, dog massacre in SE China >> >> >>Zhejiang is among the top three or four dog meat producing states >>in China. Guest guest
Hi, thanks for the points. Here follows my anwser as clear as I know. 1. Cixi is a county city under Ningbo city in Zhejiang province. 2. Dog eating was the tradition of several minorities, e.g. Korea and people in the southwestern mountain areas, in China and became a trend in the big cities since 1980s. 3. The fee for one time rabies vaccination is RMB 60.00 in the vet clinic. The actual cost is RMB 20.00.It is available in every vet clinic, even is the rural areas. 4.Vaccinated dog has a certificate and a lable in some areas. 5. Each province in China has its own policy on pet dog. Most of them permit pet dog keeping on the basis of an annual fee system in areas above town level. As for the rural areas, there is no regulation on dog keeping. Markets of pet dog is very common. The only difference between " black " and " white " market is just whether the government takes managing fee from the market. Anyone can rent a stand in the market to sell pet. There's no restriction on the health situation of the pets been sold there. 6. Everywhere in rural China there are stray dogs because the farmers let their pet dog stray in the village where You can hardly tell a pet dog from a real stray dog.In cities, stray dog is also a big problem.
