He said until the report is presented to the state government, no physical work could be carried out on Pulau Tioman, once rated among the world & #8217;s 10 most beautiful islands. Residents and visitors had complained that the marina, which is to cost some RM40mil, would jeopardise centuries-old corals, marine life and unique forest species there. In recent years, the tropical island, which was the location for the Hollywood film South Pacific in 1958, had also been the subject of numerous documentaries, including those on the National Geographic and Animal Planet channels. Sultan Ahmad Shah, who visited the island and heard a briefing on its development yesterday, told reporters he had asked Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob to meet the islanders and those involved in the project. His visit here was to get hands-on information on what is happening on the island, said the Sultan, who also met land owners who told him the project was causing them to lose their ancestral lands. The Ruler said a lot of things had to be given due consideration but, he stressed, he wanted to see some sort of development on the island. The Sultan said while the marina had not yet started, there had been reports in the media, which he felt, did not give clear explanations about the project. Following the royal visit to the island and their meeting with the Sultan, the people said there is now a sense of relief among them. Monte Chalet owner Ismail Ashaari, 54, described the meeting as “quite positive.” “Sultan advised us that the decision is not final and asked us to be patient. “We are grateful that the Sultan has shown interest in helping to solve this issue,” he said, adding that they forwarded their concerns on environment protection and suggestions on the marina project, which could be shifted from its proposed site at Kampung Tekek to another location. Mohamed Idrus, 59, said he once sold five acres of land to the government for a school project that eventually did not take off. He added: “I had sacrificed my five acres for development. My son Noran is left with just an acre of land near the proposed marina site.“ Earlier reports: & #8216;Barges should not be at Tioman & #8217; Sultan of Pahang to visit Tioman to see marina project
________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2003 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
