Veterinary department confirms bird flu outbreak

PETALING JAYA: The deadly H5 bird flu virus strain has been detected and

confirmed at three locations within the 10km radius of the quarantined area at

the Tumpat district in Kelantan, said Veterinary Services Department

director-general Datuk Dr Hawari Hussein.

& #147;The surveillance teams carried out inspection and sampling and have

detected cases, which have been confirmed as the H5 influenza avian virus

infection by the Veterinary Research Institute at three locations in the 10km

radius quarantined area.

& #147;Culling of the chickens, ducks and birds at these locations will begin

tonight, & #148; he said in a press statement yesterday.

The locations are Kampung Kebakat, Jajahan Tumpat; Kampung Paloh Hilir, Jajahan

Pasir Mas; and Kampung Cabang Tiga, Jajahan Kota Baru.

The quarantined area is within a 10km radius of Kampung Pasir Pekan and Kampung

Belian.

Kampung Belian is one of two villages in Tumpat district where several

free-range chickens and fighting roosters were found to have died of bird flu.

Kampung Baru in Pasir Pekan, located five kilometres from Kampung Belian, is

the other affected village.
