Guest guest
On Saturday morning (28.08.2004) an adult Peacock, was found in an injured state, on the college playground, by the staff of A.S.College for Boys ,Khanna distt.Ludhiana(Pb).Few Peacocks visit the college campus due to shady trees and safe environment. Staff informed Head of Zoology Deptt.,Dr.Narinder Singh, Who after ensuring safety of Bird informed People For Animals’ Shelter for Animals & Birds(Jeev Kalyan Kendra & Bhagwan Mahavir Abhayshala) as there is no such Govt.shelter in Punjab. On getting information undersigned contacted Divisional Forest officer & Forest Range Officer, Doraha, sent his staff & arranged the shifting of Peacock to PFA Shelter. On examination the PFA Vet. found that there was no apparent injury or Fracture, however it was limping and was unable to fly. There was every possibility of Blunt injury on right thigh, probably due to hitting by someone. Treatment was Started and expert opinion from Dr.M.P.Singh, a Bird Specialist (Who also visits Chatt Bir Zoo) and Dr.Vibhu Parkash of Vulture centre Panchkula was also sought. They suggested some analgesics, Vitamins and Minerals (Calcium). A wildlife expert from Srilanka Dr.Kala Santha also advised some medicines and local application on email. The High protein diet was provided by Mixing pulses to grains and Millets.Marble Chips was added to diet, which is necessary for digestion of food. Soft straw Bedding was provided and bird was kept in a large cage in an isolated Room, without much human interference. Homoeopathic Medicine was also administered by undersigned .After two days’ treatment the bird started showing improvement and started moving in cage and standing on both legs. The painkillers have been stopped as in wild animals /birds very less medicines should be administered. The bird is provided with Vitamins and Calcium mixed in drinking Water. The National Bird has been Provided a VVIP treatment. The bird is hale and hearty and will be handed over to wildlife Deptt. as it can not be kept along with human beings for long, in captivity. Who will release it at a safe place, in company of other Peacocks. Keeping Peacock in captivity and hunting it is an offence under Wildlife Protection Act 1972(Ammended2003).
