Panther attacks logger

BY R.S.N. Murali

KUALA PILAH: A 49-year-old logger survived a two-hour encounter with a panther

in a jungle in Kundur, near here on Sunday evening.

Lim Ah Kow from Taman Sri Gelugor here suffered serious injuries to his legs

after being mauled several times by the animal which followed him up a tree.

He described the panther as being & #147;as big as an adult Alsatian dog and

pitch black in colour. & #148;

Lim said he had trekked into the jungle with his friends to mark trees for

felling at about 6pm when they heard an unusual growl upon reaching a dense

spot, about 100 metres from where they parked their motorcycles.

& #147;I saw something running towards us and then one of my friends who was

ahead shouted & #147;rimau, rimau & #148;(tiger, tiger). We each climbed up a tree

to get away but the panther followed me, & #148; he said at the Seremban Hospital,

yesterday.

He said he was shocked to see that the animal was a panther and not a tiger

after he got on to the tree.

& #147;I tried to chase away the panther for almost two hours from the top of

the tree but it refused to leave.

& #147;It then climbed up the tree, clawed my left leg and dragged me down. Its

claws ripped the skin from both my legs.

& #147;I reached out for my dagger, which I usually take along whenever I enter

the jungle, and slashed the animal several times, & #148; he said.

Lim said the injured panther subsequently released its grip on him and growled

before fleeing into the jungle.

He was rushed to the Kuala Pilah Hospital by his friends with the help of the

orang asli community in the area.

Lim was later transferred to the hospital here, yesterday.
